Turkey - Türkiye

Introduction

Turkey is a country that is rich in both history and culture. As a nation uniquely divided across two continents, its location embodies the exciting and phenomenal merging of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, making it the one place in the world that truly has it all. With deeply-rooted cultural connections to ancient Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires, Turkey is a bubbling hotpot of old European culture. While the cities buzz with a lively modernity, breath-taking remnants and semblances of the country’s expansive history can be seen wherever you go. Functioning as a continuing display of art and history, the land upon which the nation stands professes of the legacies of civilisations long past and the antiquity of Turkish culture.

Politics

The Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923 with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as the country’s first president. Throughout the years since, the parliamentary representative democracy of Turkey has developed an order of secular Westernisation based on Atatürk’s concepts of reform, including the unification of education. The legal framework of the country, as it is stipulated in the constitution, maintains principles that establish Turkey as a unitary centralised state.

Laws

The legal system in Turkey has been integrated wholly with that of continental Europe. Elements of the Swiss Civil Code, the German Commercial Code, and the Code of Obligations are apparent in Turkish Civil Law. Turkish Administrative Law is comparable to that of the French, and the Penal Code to the Italian equivalent.

Climate

The Marmara, Aegean, and Mediterranean coasts have hot summers and mild winters. The Black Sea Coastal regions have a temperate climate with warm summers, mild winters, and relatively high rainfall. Central Turkey, conversely, has a steppe climate, with hot, dry summers and cold winters. Eastern Turkey tends to have long, snowy and cold winters with mild summers and an average yearly rainfall reaching the highest in the country at 87 in. In the Southeast, there are hot summers with mild, rainy winters.

Cost

These calculations are based on an average of the whole of Turkey, and may vary depending on location. Results were updated in November 2015.
